David enjoyed a busy and rewarding weekend at the Devon County Show, meeting with local farmers, producers, and representatives from key agricultural organisations.
At the show, he took the opportunity to meet with local farmers, producers, and representatives from key agricultural organisations, including the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) and the Country Land and Business Association (CLA). These conversations gave him valuable insight into the current challenges and opportunities facing Devon’s farming community.
He also visited stalls from well-known local producers such as Darts Farm and Greendale, as well as the Bicton College stand, wo recently earned an Outstanding rating from Ofsted. David saw firsthand the valuable work being done to support and train the next generation of farmers.
Looking ahead, David is organising a meeting for early June with Devon farmers, working alongside the NFU. Key topics will include the recent and sudden withdrawal of the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) scheme, as well as upcoming changes to Business Property Relief (BPR) and Agricultural Property Relief (APR), which risk causing uncertainty and financial strain for many family farms.
"Visiting the Devon County Show was a great chance to connect with the people who are the backbone of our rural economy. From farmers to local producers and educators, there’s a real passion here for preserving Devon’s agricultural heritage.
The conversations I had with the NFU and CLA highlighted just how critical it is that farmers get clear information and proper support in response to the sudden changes they face.
I’m organising a meeting in early June to ensure Devon’s farmers have a direct line to decision makers and their concerns are heard loud and clear."
