I’m Standing Up for Veterans Rights in Parliament

Here in Exmouth and Exeter East, we have a strong veteran community – a group that I am proud to be part of. I know that many are worried about the implications of the Government’s plan to repeal sections of the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act. I want to reassure the community that I’m working closely with the Shadow Defence team to stand up for our veterans.

The Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act provides a balanced approach, which addresses one of the most painful chapters in British history. It created a framework to investigate unresolved deaths during the Troubles through an Independent Commission, while offering conditional immunity to those who cooperate. It was not about sweeping history under the carpet but about drawing a line under it, in a manner that respected both victims and the rule of law.

I am therefore, deeply concerned by the Labour Government’s plan to repeal key parts of the Legacy Act. Doing so now would reopen old wounds and risks dragging hundreds of veterans – many of them elderly - into legal limbo. Many have already faced repeated investigations without resolution.  These men and women served the United Kingdom with honour and integrity, often in impossible circumstances. It is both unjust and unproductive to pursue them decades later under shifting legal and political standards.

There is currently an open petition calling on the Government not to change legislation in a way that would allow veterans who served in Northern Ireland during Operation Banner (1969–2007) to be prosecuted for doing their duty. At the time of writing, it has already surpassed the 100,000 signatures mark, a remarkable achievement that means it is now eligible to be considered for debate in the House of Commons. I would urge you to sign the petition to help ensure the number of signatories is as high as possible. A strong show of support will send a clear message to the Government and help ensure they cannot avoid proper scrutiny on this important matter.

We should stand by our veterans, who have given their all for our country. At a time when the world feels increasingly dangerous, it is more important than ever that we maintain trust in our Armed Forces, ensuring that future generations are willing to serve. We cannot expect young men and women to join up if they fear that their service will be second-guessed decades later in politically charged courtrooms. We owe it to those who’ve served - and those who will – to stop this repeal and protect our veterans from being dragged back into the past.
