Making the Case for Bridge Road Improvements

This week I wrote to Lilian Greenwood MP, Minister for the Future of Roads, to urge the Government to prioritise the Bridge Road scheme in Exeter as part of the Major Road Network programme. I have given my full support to Devon County Council’s bid to secure the funding needed to deliver these essential improvements.

Bridge Road is one of the most important routes in our area. It links Exmouth, Topsham, and the eastern fringes of Exeter with the city centre and the M5. Every day thousands of people, commuters, businesses, and students rely on this road whether they are travelling by car, public transport, cycling, or walking.

As Exeter and East Devon continue to grow, the pressure on Bridge Road is increasing. Congestion is getting worse, safety remains a concern, and without investment we risk lane closures due to ageing infrastructure. This would cause major disruption and undermine access to jobs, education, and essential services.

The improvements proposed by Devon County Council would make Bridge Road more resilient, tackle long-standing congestion and safety issues, and ensure reliable journeys for everyone who depends on it. Without timely action we risk putting the area’s housing and employment growth at risk.

I believe it is vital that the Department for Transport recognises just how important this route is, not just for Exeter but for communities right across East Devon. That is why I will continue to back this bid and press the Government to make it a priority.
